begin this morning with the flooding in daly city where the clean up has begun. we have both nbc bay area's christie smith and bob redell redell with us. we start off with christie smith of the details and what happened. any clean up yet, christie? >> reporter: good morning. it has been a morning and a mess here in daly city. there are front loaders and vacuum trucks everywhere trying to deal with this mudslide. it started with a water pipe that broke off. i wanted to show you what it has done to the hillside this morning as a section came down bringing trees and debris right into the neighborhood. neighbors say it sounded like a storm. water rushing down the hillside along lusanne avenue carrying debris and trees trapping parked cars. it was just to the left of romero's home. >> i was not aware there was a tank up there. >> reporter: what do you think now that you know what happened? >> i'm guessing, you know, infrastructure might be getting old. >> reporter: the gap in the hillside shows where it came from. there is a 978,000 gallon water tank that was 3/4 full. >> it is an eight-i

chopper above the scene in daly city. here's a look at the map to show you where this all happened. a mud slide caused by a water main break which dumped about 45,000 gallons of water into this neighborhood. it turned into a muddy mess. the question now, what about the other aging pipes along the peninsula. let's bring in kris sanchez who joins us in daly city. good evening, kris. >> reporter: hi there, raj. it was about this dark this morning when the mud started flowing down this street in this daly city neighborhood so residents really didn't know what they were going to see once the sun rose, but what a sight it was, they woke up after an 8-inch city water main break broke sending a torrent of 40,000 plus gallons of water down the hillside. it picked up mud, it picked up debris and it picked up steam along the way. residents said it sounded like a storm but when they looked out the window, it was too dark to know what it was. then came the knocks at doors, warning people to get out. >> i saw the police out here and about 5:00 they were here and i could see the water coming down and th

a big-time mud and water slide begins gushing down a street. christie smith is live in daly city with all the dough tails. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. you know, the water flow has stopped this morning, but what an absolute mess out here in daly city this morning with mud and water. you can see this right here up the hill, though, the mud is actually measured in feet. crews are out here with vacuum trucks this morning and front loaders trying to clean it all up. higher up there is actually a slide on the hillside. you can see what happened after that water main break overnight on luzanne avenue. one firefighter told me there is a water storage facility up the hill but whether it's tied to this is still unclear. cars completely submerged past their tires in mud this morning. eight homes evacuated. people getting help from the red cross. 100 homes without water. what's going to happen for the rest of the afternoon is cleanup. still don't know what caused this all. jon, back to you. >> all right, tough going out there. thank you very much. we'll check in righ

. reporting live in daly city, kris sanchez, nbc bay area. >> a lot of concerned residents. thanks, kris. >>> new at 5:00, a hunt for a pair of dangerous criminals in the east bay. walnut creek police want you to take a good look at the surveillance pictures. this is one of the suspects. police say he went by the name aubrey. he and a second man who went by the name david are accused of kidnapping and carjacking a 57-year-old woman as she left work last wednesday. investigators say the men tied her up, blindfolded her, and drove her to various places, trying to get money from atms. afterwards, they drev the woman to an isolated area in the oakland hills where they let her go. anyone with information is asked to call walnut creek police. >>> we have new details in a story that has all the makings of a dateline nbc. where is john mcafee? they're urging him to come in for questioning to help solve the murder of his neighbor. the 57-year-old mcafee is considered a person of interest in the weekend shooting of gregory fall. this all happened in belize. mcafee told cnbc, quote, i've been accus

. crews in daly city are working feverishly to clear out that massive mudslide before it gets even worse. nbc bay area's christie smith shows us what is being done, and why neighbors are still concerned. >> reporter: no sleeping in today. the front loader started at day break at hillside park, moving the mudslide by emanuel romero's home. >> i think if there is anything about the integrity hill that we needed to be worried about, they would tell us. we're assuming things are safe for now. >> reporter: his car was towed back to his house when it was nearly buried yesterday when a pipe broke, sending 45,000 gallons of water, sand, and mud down the same avenue, and now heavy rain is coming. >> if we're going to be bringing in some hay bales and uncovering where the storm drains have been covered over. >> reporter: he says the engineers say the 12 homes that were evacuate ready safe, but they need geotek cal advice on permanent repairs to the hill. for now it's about diverting rainwater. >> once we get the weather taken care we can sequentially take the mud out of the park itself. right now

in daly city are working hard to clean up a massive mudslide before it gets worse. they brought in heavy equipment to hillside park under 3 feet of mud still. they are trying to dig a path and use straw and hay to keep it from flowing back in the street. yesterday a pipe broke spilling 45,000 gallons of water and sand and mud. look at that car, nearly buried in mud which has now been cleared out. 40 neighbors were evacuated but their homes luckily are safe. >> i think if there's anything about the integrity of the hill that we need to be worried about, they would tell us. >> the department of water and water management says that engineers believe the hillside is stable as you heard. after the rain is over, they may have to move the mud back into the area. the city will need gee geo technical advice to come up with a fix. >>> cal students are fighting to keep tuition from going up again. the board unveiled the framework for next year's budget and tuition hikes could be on the way. nbc bay area's jody hernandez joins us live where students are taking a stand and even the governor says this
